About Us

horizontal rule

We were at it again, out looking for a place to meet.  Thanks to Ed Eich the Hilton Hotel at Sandestin became our temporary home.  A great meeting place but a little pricey for our limited budget.  It wasn't long before Ed Eich came through again with a new meeting place, the Faith Assembly Church in Sandestin.  A great place to meet and was centrally located for most members.  We may have lost a few members who lived in Inlet Beach and Destin when it was to dark or to far to drive at night.  Our membership continued to grow and many meetings in the "kitchen" were full.  Membership dues remained at $20.00 per year.  Barbara Boyer (our treasurer) continued to save our dues for a new LCD projector.  We never had quite enough funds to make the purchase.  One of our members (described as a very generous person) made an anonymous donation that afforded us the opportunity to buy a new projector. With out the kindness of this member and others our purchase of a new projector was over a year away.  The first time we turned on the projector it took the "experts" almost 20 minutes to read the instructions, but when the computer screen was projected onto the large movie screen everyone applauded.  The applause was a way of saying thanks to the anonymous donor who made it all possible.  Our training took on another new dimension and members could not get enough of the training with the projection system.  More and more members of the community came and joined SWCIG.  Electronic e-mailing took on a new look and more members began switching over to Microsoft Outlook Express.  AOL uses stood their ground and at times would defend their choice of web browser.  At times our meeting moved to the "Big Hall" to accommodate all of the new members and snowbirds.  Our basic meeting format continued to be refined over time.  The first part of the meeting was devoted to questions and answers with new software and hardware updates and a special presentation on the basics, like the Window 98 operating system.  The second half of the program usually was for major presentations by one or more of the members featuring a new software or hardware device.  Pat Patrick's Top Ten became part of every meeting.  Without Doug Harris, Vice President & Membership Chairperson our presentations would not be the same. Doug makes the internet connections work a little faster and is always anticipating the presenter's next move.  We have another member who make "house calls" and is considered the best in South Walton.  Even after retirement and all of those fishing trips, Howard Griffin finds time to help members in trouble.  A special thanks to Larry Wons for making our first web site for South Walton Computer Club a reality. Without the support of all of our past and current members the computer club would not exist.  A special thank you is extended to all.

Where did all the time go these past few years?  The club history is ongoing and you can find an update at this site every six months.  If anything was left out please do not hesitate to let us know.
